Joe Hisaishi (b.1950) is an award winning Japanese composer, conductor, arranger and pianist primarily known for his film music. His collaboration with director and animator Hayao Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli has seen him score every film of Miyazaki's but one.
The 1997 Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke is an animated historical fantasy film which follows Ashitaka, a young Emishi prince who journeys west to cure his cursed arm and becomes embroiled in the conflict between the forest of the gods and a nearby town, as well as the feud between Lady Eboshi, the town's leader, and San, a human girl raised by wolves.
Hisaishi included some of the music from the film in this album of symphonic treatments of his Studio Ghibli scores.
