Gershwin - Catfish Row

George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess is generally considered as one of the most important operas from an American composer. Based on DuBose Heyward's 1925 novel Porgy, the opera is set in the slums of Charleston, and the tenement building Catfish Row, and deals with a disabled beggar, Porgy trying to rescue Bess from her violent lover and drug dealer.

The symphonic suite that Gershwin arranged from the opera was entitled Catfish Row to distinguish it from the suite arranged by Robert Russell Bennett in 1942 at Fritz Reiner's request. It has five movements, as described here.

This recording was made in 1984 by Seiji Ozawa conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
