"Wienerwalzer Paprika"

This 1958 Mercury recording featuring popular waltzes in the Viennese style was one of the earliest recordings made by the Philharmonia Hungarica - an orchestra formed by Hungarian musicians who had left their country after the Soviet invasion in 1956. Their first concert, in May 1957, was in the Vienna Konzerthaus - where this recording was made. Under the direction of Antal Dorati the orchestra became a fine addition to the European music scene.

The music on the record, from composers such as Franz Lehar and Josef Strauss, is described in the album sleeve notes below (click on the scan to enlarge).
