If anyone knows a work by Gustav Holst it will be The Planets Suite. The enormous popularity of this piece as an orchestral showcase has overshadowed most of Holst's other works. But of course he wrote a great many other pieces worthy of attention, such as The Hymn of Jesus. Holst's style in these two big works came after a period of searching for a form of expression which he could call his own, and an early work like the Suite de Ballet here is an example of this.
The Suite, though inspired by dance music was not specifically intended to accompany a ballet. The album sleeve notes (click the image below) give a description of the four movements.
